The Southern Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) is seeking an energetic and knowledgeable Interpretive Hiking Guide to join our team and lead school students on full-day nature hikes in Calgary and Kananaskis Country. This is a contract position for the duration of our hiking season, which runs in the fall from the beginning of September to the end of October and in the spring from the end of April until the end of June.

Organization Background:

CPAWS Southern Alberta is a dynamic and successful conservation organization that works to protect wild ecosystems in parks and protected areas. Since 1997, we have engaged over 70,000 students and teachers in Calgary and its surrounding communities in environmental learning. Our interpretive hikes focus on grizzly bear ecology and conservation, endangered species, and water conservation and stewardship. Through our interpretive hiking programs, we seek to engage urban students in wilderness experience and foster a greater appreciation and understanding of the natural world.

Position Description:

The Interpretive Hiking Guide will be responsible for leading groups of students (gr. 3-12) on full-day themed educational hikes in wilderness settings. The Interpretive Hiking Guide will work closely with the Environmental Education Coordinator to conduct hikes in a safe and professional manner. In addition to program delivery, the Interpretive Hiking Guide will be responsible for maintaining hiking supplies, distributing and collecting feedback forms and collecting liability waivers.

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated self-starter with very strong teaching and communications skills, and a high level of experience in nature interpretation. The candidate must also possess excellent organizational skills and have a passion for nature and teaching. Prior experience working with youth is required.

A vehicle and driver’s license are essential for this position. A criminal records check and current wilderness remote responder or higher level wilderness First Aid is also required.

Salary for this position is set at $150 per day (hikes usually last 4-6 hours).
