Water For Life: A Renewal

Alberta’s Water for Life strategy outlines the Government’s commitment to manage and safeguard our water resources. The strategy has been the vehicle for managing Alberta’s water resources since its release in 2003. The renewed version of the strategy was completed in 2008 to better reflect Alberta’s growing population and increase in economic growth over the past few years.

The main goals of the strategy are:

  • safe, secure drinking water;
  • healthy aquatic ecosystems; and
  • reliable, quality water supplies for a sustainable economy.

The renewal incorporates the importance of safeguarding our water sources and the urgency in accelerating our actions to address water conservation. The Water for Life Action Plan is the blueprint that will be used to support the goals of the strategy, and these goals will be met through participation from various partnerships.

Water for Life provides government support for each watershed to have a WPAC (Watershed Planning and Advisory Council). WPACs are charged raising awareness about their watershed and assisting with the creation of watershed management plans.

CPAWS SA is involved with the Oldman Watershed Council on the Integrated Watershed Management Planning Team. This team is working to create a watershed management plan that integrates biological science pertaining to the state of the watershed with social research investigating residents’ values and vision for their watershed.
