Master Bow Stewards Program
Master Bow Stewards - 20 Hour Course
Learn about global water issues and protecting our watershed
Offered in conjunction with the Green Calgary, the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) and Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS - Southern Alberta Chapter), this course will give participants an overview of global, national, and regional water issues. The focus is on the Bow River Basin, training participants to be stewards of our watershed by understanding the links between water quality, quantity, climate, wildlife and all factors contributing to the health of our watershed.

Details: Get involved with one of the greatest issues facing our region today. Learn about water from experts and develop the skills and knowledge to pass on what you have learned. CAWST, CPAWS and Clean Calgary Association will help participants navigate the world of water looking at topics including:
- Commoditization of water
- Access to clean water
- Local, regional and national water policies/strategies
- Conservation and consumer decisions about water
- Wildlife and water
- The Bow river basin.
Participants will also have the option to participate in two field trips: the Pathways and River Clean Up followed by an interpretive walk and a trip to the Waste Water Treatment plant.
Cost: $350 or $150 plus a 25 hour time commitment to volunteer.

Location: City of Calgary Water Centre
Dates: Course runs once a year - next course will run in spring 2010
Registration Notes: Course will run with a min. of 15 people and a max. of 30 people.
Facilitator: The Coordinator of Environmental Education at Green Calgary will facilitate the course with help from CAWST and CPAWS.
VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS
The Southern Alberta Chapter of Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) works to protect wild ecosystems and watersheds in parks and protected areas; one of the best tools to do this is education and outreach. Teaching about basic ecology and the conservation of Albertas wildlife, watersheds and ecosystems increases environmental literacy and builds an ethic of environmental responsibility. Graduates of the Master Bow Stewards course would be a welcomed addition to the CPAWS Southern Alberta volunteer team. As part of a volunteer commitment option with CPAWS, Master Bow Stewards (depending on interests and preferences) could engage in the following activities to protect watersheds and educate the public:
- Volunteering for CPAWS Education Department; program delivery, development, staff assistance
- Working at outreach events; booths, festivals, campaigns such as protect the Nahanni, and events such as the Canoe Commute
- Writing articles for our newsletter Green Notes
- Participating in our Conservation Leadership Program.
The CAWST, Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology is a registered Canadian charity that provides professional services - education, training and technical consulting - to organizations that serve the poor in developing countries. CAWST doesn't fund or implement projects. Instead, we provide the services that are the catalyst for independent, community-driven water and sanitation projects. As part of a volunteer commitment option with CAWST, Master Bow Stewards volunteers can fulfil their hours in a number of ways. Possibilities include:
- Volunteering as Presenters and Booth hosts
- Translators
- Website content assistants
- Data Entry Assistant
- Tool kits assembler/ Mini-Biosand filter builder/ Sieve sets constructor / Training room coordinator / Handyman
- Billet & Guest hosts
Green Calgary is a dynamic, non-profit urban environmental organization with a mission to empower Calgarians to create healthy homes and communities through environmental education, products, and services. Master Bow Stewards volunteers can fulfill their hours in many different way and are welcome to choose from the following roles:
- Volunteering at Green Calgary's EcoStore
- Volunteering at Green Calgary's Annual Rain Barrel Sale or other one-day events
- Environmental Information Provider- Phones or Email
- Program specific volunteering such as giving presentations
- Research
- Building projects
- Administrative tasks
- Working booths at gardening shows
- Self-directed projects such as writing articles
