How to Participate

Please read and follow these steps to participate in Capture the Wild Photography Contest:

  1. Read and accept our rules and regulations.

  2. Choose your payment method.

  3. Prepare and send us your photograph(s) (JPG, JPEG, TIF file format or prints).

  1. Submit as many entries as you wish in any of the seven categories. An image can only win once. The maximum number of winning entries per photographer is two. Entry fee is $5 per image payable by cheque, cash, or credit card through or here on our Web site (once you accept the rules and regulations.

  2. The format of entries can be digital files (JPEG or TIFF file format only), or slides or photographic prints (not to exceed 8 x 12) sent by mail. Colour photocopies and framed images will not be accepted.

  3. Photos in digital format must be submitted via the CPAWS Capture the Wild Photo Contest Web page (accessible from the entry payment page). Photos may be taken with a digital camera or scanned into digital format with a maximum size of 80MB (81,920 kb).

  4. Files containing more than one single picture will not be accepted (such as a file containing a grid with multiple images in it).

  5. For online photo submissions, payment must be made no later than five (5) business days after the photograph was uploaded.

  6. Printed entries, cash or cheques must be dropped off by 5:00pm MDT, or mailed postmarked no later than Monday, December 29, 2008 to the CPAWS Office, #1120, 1202 Centre Street SE, Calgary, Alberta, Canada T2G 5A5.

  7. Digital files must be send no later than 11:00pm MDT, Monday, December 29, 2008 through this Web site.

  8. Adding or removing elements from the photograph(s) is not allowed. However, the use of filters or techniques that are part of the chemical processing procedure, such as colour balance, brightness, exposure, contrast, sharpening, cropping and removing noise and dust are acceptable in all categories.

  9. Printed images or slides must have the entrant's name, address and phone number, as well as a caption or identification of each photo. Please use the entry form in the brochure or print it from our Web site (a href="capturewild-entry.pdf">click here to download an entry form. (Acrobat [PDF] format, ~10K)). Avoid signatures, stamps or any other identifying mark anywhere on the front of the photograph.

  10. Digital photograph file name(s) must use the following format: Photographer first and last name + initials of the category you want to place your pictures + picture number (if submitting more than one image). Using this format will assure that your images will be identifiable.

    Julie Smith AIN
    Julie Smith CPPA 1 of 2
    Julie Smith CPPA 2 of 2

    This person submitted 1 photograph in the "Amateur - Images of Nature" category and 2 in the Canadian Parks and Protected Areas.

    Once you change the name, make sure the file still opens properly.

  11. Winning entrants will be notified within three weeks of contest close. Winners that have submitted prints will be required to provide negative(s) or original JPEG or TIFF file(s) to CPAWS no later than January 18, 2009. Enlargements will be produced for the Wild Gala silent auction.

  12. Please package your photos securely, as CPAWS cannot accept responsibility for losses or damage.

  13. Contest is open to everyone except individuals that have been directly involved in the planning of this event.

  14. Judges reserve the right to transfer entries to a different category.

  15. Entries will be judged on the basis of creativity, photographic quality, marketability, how the image expresses the theme of the category and how the image expresses the overall theme of wilderness. Decisions of the judges are final.

  16. If you want a submitted printed image returned, you must include a self-addressed stamped envelope with sufficient Canadian postage (stamps only). We cannot return submissions accompanied by US or other foreign postage.

  17. CPAWS will retain partial use of entries and reserves the right to publish all photographs and/or use them in any type of promotion or sponsor advertising including newsletters, displays, Web site or promotional materials without compensation to the photographer. Model and property releases are the responsibility of the entrant and should be available for identifiable people upon submission.
