Your voice needed on future of the rocky mountain National Parks

If you believe that Canada needs to preserve Banff and all of our national parks as places where protecting nature is the highest priority, please make your voice heard!

Parks Canada has drafted new management plans for each rocky mountain National Park (Banff, Jasper, Glacier, Kootenay, Yoho, Waterton, Revelstoke) that will set the direction for the future.

The new Banff Park management plan is especially important because it will likely set the tone for managing all of the Rocky Mountain parks - the "crown jewels" of Canada's national park system. This deadline for public comment on the draft Banff management plan has been extended to January 8th, 2010.

The draft Banff management plan places high priority on ways to increase visitation in the park. Yet scientific study has shown that the park's ecological integrity is already under stress from the high numbers of visitors it receives.

CPAWS supports efforts to continue to attract people to visit Canada's parks. However, in recent years, Parks Canada has approved golf tournaments and dragon boat races within Banff National Park. This is NOT the direction we had in mind. There could be more such activities in the future though if the current draft plan is approved.
